The Sunshine Blogger Award allows bloggers to highlight and celebrate their fellow bloggers’ creativity and positivity within the blogging community.
I’m chuffed to little mint balls and absolutely delighted to have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award, along with ten other bloggers, by Jan Brigden, whose lovely blog you can find here. She had previously been nominated, so congratulations to you, too, Jan! Very well deserved, if I may so! Thank you very much for nominating me. xx
Below are the 11 questions set by Jan for her nominees, with my answers :
What are the best and worst gifts you’ve ever received?
Oh, golly. I can see already that this is going to be tricky! Right, well, best gift … I’ve had so many lovely gifts from family and friends. Just this Christmas I got some gorgeous presents from my husband and children and my sister. My friend, Julie, has given me some lovely things, too. Aarrgghh! Okay, I’m going to say the best gift I was ever given was the memorial plaque that was given to the family of my great-grandfather, who was killed in the first war. My grandad passed it on to me to look after when I was a little girl, which demonstrated to me how much he loved me and trusted me. I will always treasure it. Worst gift? Oh, that seems a bit mean. Can I say the worst gift I’ve ever given? It was when I was quite young and had been allowed to go into town by myself to buy Christmas presents. I had no idea what to buy my mother, so I asked the store assistant for advice. I must have told her my mum was quite old, because she suggested a Vera Lynn album! I was really pleased with myself and my mum made a great job of sounding thrilled when she opened it, although she was definitely much more into pop music and must have felt quite insulted. She was probably only around thirty at the time!
Who is the celebrity you’d most like to share a 100 mile taxi ride with and why?
Can I cheat and have two? Laurel and Hardy. I can’t think of anyone who would be more fun to be stuck in a taxi with and I couldn’t possibly choose between them.
If you could interview any author past or present, who would it be and why?
Enid Blyton. I know she’s had some bad press, but I grew up loving her books. They made my childhood that bit brighter, and I definitely owe my love of reading to her. It was her books that stirred my imagination and inspired me to start writing my own stories. I owe her so much and I’d love to be able to thank her for that.
What’s the most nerve-racking thing you’ve ever done in your life?
Gone off to meet two total strangers for an afternoon of writerly conversation. I’d only talked to one of them briefly online (on Romna – the Romantic Novelists’ Association online chapter) and she asked me if I’d like to meet up with her and another writer friend for a drink, so we could all discuss our writing and get to know each other a bit better. I was petrified because, back then, I was terrified of meeting new people, and the whole thing sounded horrific. I still have no idea what made me say yes, but for some reason I did, and thank goodness for that. Those two people turned out to be Alys West and Jessica Redland, and because of them I ended up joining the Write Romantics and my entire life changed. Plus, I made two completely lovely and fantastic friends.
What’s your idea of the perfect holiday?
Beautiful scenery, no schedule to follow, family, fun, good food, clean and comfortable accommodation! My best holiday ever was in Cornwall. Love the place.
What do you find best helps you to relax, de-stress and re-focus?
Being in the countryside or by the sea. Just listening to birdsong, looking at flowers or water. Breathing in fresh air. Nature.
Which song triggers happy memories for you and why?
Too many to list! Do I really have to pick one? Okay, let’s go for the theme music to Black Beauty. As a horse mad child, that programme was the highlight of my week. When I hear it now (and I do have the entire series on DVD) I am straight back to my childhood home, with my mum and dad and my siblings. It’s a Sunday evening and it’s school tomorrow, but I have half an hour ahead of me that’s pure bliss, as I watch Vicky or Jenny and their adventures with that beautiful horse. I could also have chosen the theme music from Follyfoot – another programme I adored. And yes, I do have the entire collection of that series on DVD, too!
Who is the fictional hero you’d most like to spring to life before your eyes?
The Doctor! Honestly, I’d be over the moon. I’d be the most useless companion ever, in the entire history of Doctor Who, but if I could just be there in the Tardis, listening to them all gabbling on I’d be enthralled. Since it’s my fantasy I’ve decided that all thirteen Doctors will be present. What a blast!
Which city in the world would you most like to visit?
To be honest, I’m not really a city person. I’d much rather be in the countryside or at the coast. If I had to choose one, I’d say Rome. It always looks impossibly glamorous on television, and there’s so much history there.
What’s your favourite food treat/indulgence (however big or small) ?
My favourite food is probably a really tasty, and not too hot but not too mild, Indian chicken curry. I also love trifle. Gosh, do I love trifle!
Which three words best describe you?
Fat, friendly, and (I hope) kind.
